THE TIME FRAME IS CURRENTLY SUBJECT TO CHANGE BASED ON INTEREST
Love Minecraft and its music, or just want a chance to write something in a short timeframe to help challenge yourself while also getting feedback? Hopefully this can be the place for you!
The aim of this is to work together to create our own interpretation of that signature "Minecraft sound", while giving each other feedback to help develop people's compositional styles, but also more technical feedback like mixing and the like. This is aiming to be very casual, so the timeline for making your track will be very broad with some extra time allotted for working on your track after the feedback and rating period to refine your submission, as the goal will be to add as many submissions as possible to the resource pack in the end.
The end goal as stated is to make a Minecraft music pack, these are done by replacing in game works in a texture pack meaning that there will only be a certain amount of songs we can take in, I will try and get as many people's as possible into the pack but depending on the number of signups i can make no promises on guaranteeing any one submission makes it into the pack, as there are only a limited number of slots for each biome. I would recommend reading this wiki page to see what slots we have available. Here are the categories that you will be able to select upon submitting your project, to help you get your ideas going!
One song that is minimum 2.5 minutes (150 seconds) long.
No genre restriction, however a important part of this is making a song that fits within the context of Minecraft! It doesn't have to reflect the compositional styles of the main composers necessarily, however Hard Rock might not go over well with your fellow composers. Maybe.
No making a track for a music disc. While we may try and fit some tracks that we don't have space for into a music disc, as they discs are pretty loose for style I'm putting a rule in place that you aren't allowed to explicitly write your entry as a song for a music disc. However Menu + Creative Mode themes are allowed!
Please Submit the audio files as a .mp3, .wav, or .flac on Itch.io AND upload to a streaming platform such as Youtube, Soundcloud, or Bandcamp. You must also upload a Screenshot of your DAW, or PDF of sheet music to prove that you made this work.
Your work must be Composed for this jam. The timeframe for this is long to allow for this. You are allowed to use old ideas that you have come up with, but for the integrity of the contest only newly created works will be allowed into the pack.
AI IN ANY FORM IS NOT ALLOWED. THIS APPLIES TO YOUR SONG, AND ANY ARTWORK CORRELATING TO IT.
While this isn't meant to be a competitive jam, ratings will be enabled to help give an extra lane for people to provide feedback, and help make decisions if we have a number of submissions that means not all entries can be put into the resource pack. Criteria are as follows:
Impression | Your general impression of the track! Did you like it? Was it engaging? Did you want to keep listening/listen again? |
Quality | The technical quality of the work, mixing, appropriate use of effects, etc |
Composition | The strength of the compositional aspects, such as Melody, Harmony, engaging rhythms, and broader things like Instrumentation and arrangement |
Creativity | Were the ideas fresh and exciting, did they feel unique to this work? |
Minecraftyness | How well did the piece adhere to the Minecraft Style, can you imagine it in game? |
While there won't be any proper "prizes" per se, I wanted to add a little reward for whoever gets first in the rankings after the initial period that doesn't really provide any disadvantage. So the top few entries will have the option to submit a track to use as a Music Disc in the final pack, in addition to their entry.
The final project will be uploaded on Soundcloud, Youtube, and potentially other streaming services if I can sort out all of that, but no promises! As well as of course the resource pack, which will be uploaded to Modrinth
