The Landlord's Game designed by Lizzie Magie in 1904

"The equal right of all men to the use of land is as clear as their equal right to breathe the air - it is a right proclaimed by the fact of their existence. For we cannot suppose that some men have a right to be in this world, and others no right."
-- Henry George

Welcome to the first George Jam. If you've never heard of George, you can think of him as the original anti-monopoly man.

Join the Georgism Discord server to engage with the community.

Now, as ever, I believe that land monopoly emowers a great tyranny over humanity. I also believe in George's Remedy, the single land value tax. George explains his views in his book Progress & Poverty. I recommend you read the book review by Lars Doucet, a game designer and consultant. It took me about an hour to get through it, but it has changed my life.

Henry George's birthday is on September 2nd, so, to spread his ideas and save the world, lets make some games about Georgism!

Lizzie Magie, a Georgist, created the Landlord's Game in 1904 (see photo above).  Her aim was to demonstrate the vile and irresistible power of land monopoly. However, she included a 2nd phase of the game where players voted in a single land value tax. This was left out of modern designs in the game Monopoly.

Lizzie Magie pioneered in both board game design and narrative design. Game designers owe her a great deal of respect. Maybe it can inspire you to join this jam and spread and explore this ideas.

So, since the idea of George are timeless, there's not any "reveal" for the theme when the jam starts.

Anything and everything Georgist goes! The Land Value Tax, Citizen's Dividend, patents, the law of human progress, the law of rent/wages/interest, debunking Malthus (over populationism), the insufficiency of current remedies, Pigouvian taxes, Harberger taxes, auctions and bidding systems.

You could also explore more modern fusings of geo-socialism/syndacalism/anarchism.  I would also be thrilled to see some multi-body sortition games! There's also "dark georgism", where you could make a game where you play as an evil landlord!

Remember, the land includes all of nature's bounty. The sun, moon, and sky. Water and earth. Space and the electromagnetic spectrum. Go forth and jam! Go forth and save the world!

This is my first time organizing a game jam, so...let's hope my enthusiasm helps me overcome any trials and tribulations.

  • So no NSFW.
  • Make teams of whatever size you want (I recommend a max of 3 or 4 people).
  • If you use assets not created by your team or not created during the jam, please provide credit (this includes utilizing AI).
  • Board game designs are allowed! May not get many testers/ratings, but go for it.
  • These are not exhaustive. Just letting you know.
  • If you create a mathematical simulation, feel free to share your source code.

To be honest, I'm still going to be ironing this out over the next month. It will be some kind of rubric likeg "Georgishness + craftsmanship + enjoyment". I am tempted to created some custom awards.

I really hope to get some cool Georgists to be judges and to make a video or two of all the submissions on YouTube, maybe here. I will also most likely play many (all?) submissions on my Twitch channel, twitch.tv/maxforgeorge.
