Core Requirements:
Classic 80's Arcade Mechanics:The gameplay must be inspired by the classic mechanics of the 80's arcade era. This could include high-score chasing, one-hit deaths, limited lives, wave-based progression, or simple but addictive controls. Participants should focus on gameplay that is easy to learn but hard to master, just like the arcade games of the past.
Retro Aesthetic:Games should feature visuals and audio that pay homage to the 80’s arcade style. This could include pixel art, limited color palettes, CRT effects, neon lights, and chiptune or 8-bit soundtracks. While the game must have a retro feel, participants can include modern graphical enhancements like smoother animations or dynamic lighting, as long as they don't break the overall 80’s vibe.
Mandatory Maze Bonus Level:
Every game must include at least one bonus level designed as a maze. The maze should challenge players differently from the main game, incorporating classic maze gameplay or adding a creative twist. The maze can be traditional (e.g., top-down, side-scrolling) or creatively integrated into the game’s main mechanics, offering players a break from the main action while providing rewards such as extra points, power-ups, or unlockable content. Innovative Twist: In addition to classic elements, each game must feature at least one innovative mechanic or concept that would have been impossible in the 80's due to technological limitations. This could involve procedural generation, physics-based gameplay, narrative integration, or a genre mashup that puts a new spin on arcade classics.
Judging Criteria:
Nostalgia Factor: How well does the game capture the essence of 80's arcade games? Does it feel like something you could have played in an arcade, with a coin slot and a crowd gathered around?
Creativity: How creatively does the game incorporate the retro theme and the mandatory maze level? Are there any unique twists that set it apart from typical arcade games?
Execution: Is the game polished, with smooth controls, coherent visuals, and well-integrated audio? Does it offer a satisfying gameplay loop that encourages replayability?
Bonus Points: Games that include optional challenges like a high score leaderboard or arcade cabinet mode will receive extra consideration.
